A Brief History Of Antique Mission Furniture
Gustav Stickley is the originator of what we commonly know in the U.S. as the mission style. Antique mission furniture is what people commonly call the work of the company started by Stickley, along with his brothers Leoplod and Albert. This company was called United Crafts, but changed its name later to Craftsman Workshops. Stickley was inspired to begin the company after a trip to Europe where he was influenced by the furniture design styles current there, the arts and crafts style. He returned home with these ideas and began his company. The result was the arts and crafts, or mission style which is still popular today.
So why the name "mission"? Stickley was also influenced by the style of the furniture from the Spanish missions which were scattered throughout the Southwestern United States. This style was a fusion of the design ideas of Europe and Mexico - and these simple, functional designs were gradually refined to become the more sophisticated types of furniture we think of as mission style today. This antique mission furniture is highly sought after by collectors and can command a high price on the auction circuit.
Antique Mission Furniture Characteristics
The clean, straight lines of mission furniture is the most recognizable feature of this style. An ideal addition to a minimal décor and country style decorating schemes alike, these pieces can work well in a variety of settings. In a modern décor, these pieces add a touch of natural warmth. This furniture takes well to a variety of stains and can provide many different neutral and earth tones. Bedrooms, dining areas and offices are all good places for this style of furniture. These pieces are available in a variety of different prices, with pieces to suit not just any décor, but any budget as well.
Antique mission furniture is typically constructed from oak; but it is not uncommon to find mission furniture which is instead made of wood which is native to the region in which it was created. Reproduction pieces of mission furniture have become more widely available recently and can be found in many different shades to match more color schemes. There are also mission style pieces which Stickley never would have conceived of in his time, such as computer desks and entertainment centers. These pieces feature the same style as you expect, fitting in perfectly with antique mission pieces in your home or office.
