Digital Photography: The Basics

Digital photography can be explained as a process that uses electronic devices to take a photograph of a particular item and translate the image into binary data that is read by a computer. In recent years, digital camera sales have greatly outnumbered the sales of traditional film cameras. Many retailers have indicated that they are discontinuing their film camera lines. In contrast to film photography, digital photography allows the photographer to see the images that they have taken immediately and delete any that are not up to standard without having to develop the pictures first.

The Popularity of Digital Photography

Digital photography is gaining in popularity all over the world. Many professional news photographers have switched to taking pictures digitally because of the higher quality of digital images and the convenience of being able to immediately review the picture that they have taken
This makes it possible to ensure that they have captured the shot. Digital photography is also used by a many amateur photographers who post the images they take on websites and send the pictures through email to family and friends. Images obtained digitally are more easily manipulated with photo editing software which can turn almost any picture taken into a quality photograph by using special filters and effects to alter the appearance of the photo.

Advantages of Using Digital Cameras Equipment

There are many advantages to digital photography over traditional film photography. The most noticeable being the ability to review photographs as soon as they are taken. If a photo is off center or blurry or the subject’s eyes are closed, the photographer can just delete the image and take another shot. Another major advantage is that after the initial purchase of a digital camera and memory card, this hobby does not need additional purchases to continue it. There is no need to purchase additional film, processing equipment, or filters and flashes to sustain the art. There are so many things that can be done with digital photography that just cannot be done with traditional film. The wide variety of applications available for use in digital photography has made the hobby one of the fastest growing hobbies in the world.
